The 5 STAR Operator Program
In today's industry, training and education are necessary to keep skating facilities safe, profitable, and growing. An individual's professional development can now be measured through the 5 STAR Operator Program.
To obtain the 5 STAR Operator Rating, individuals may take the three technical training courses offered through the STAR/Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (O.R.F.A.) Alliance and the two STAR management courses. The three technical training courses are requirements of the Certified Ice Technician (C.I.T.) Professional Designation recognized by the National Hockey League.

The CIT designation will be granted to professionals in the United States who successfully complete the industry-related, multi-level training program involving the following courses:
- Basic Refrigeration (BR)
- Ice Making & Painting Technologies (IMPT)
- Ice Maintenance & Equipment Operation (IMEO)
Participants in each level are required to successfully complete a competency-based examination obtaining a mark equal to or greater than 60%
